Meeting a Community Need in the 1970s

In the early to mid-1970s, senior citizens and people with disabilities in western Wayne County needed transportation that was not being provided by SEMTA, the regional transportation authority at the time. Residents needed dependable rides to doctors’ offices, grocery stores, pharmacies, dialysis appointments, and social events.

Five Communities Create Nankin Transit

After many meetings and discussions, Westland City Councilman Glen Shaw took the lead in bringing neighboring communities together. Canton Township, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, and Westland agreed to financially support a new transportation service.

Councilman Shaw began the process of creating an interlocal agreement for the participating communities to sign, establishing a new authority to serve their residents.
